OBJECTIVE
Collaborate in a team of four to create a high quality quarterly publication that promotes the cultural development of Sacramento. Each quarter will cycle through 5 different topics allowing for a different set of 4 magazine topics to be released every year. The topics are: design, art, music, food and drink, and community. Content for the magazine is to be created through each group with each person responsible for at least one article.
Each group will conduct research on potential audiences and competitors. The final product should be a reflection of the collected data.
PROCESS
Each person was able to choose what topic they wanted from the 5 which would then indicate which group that person would be in and who they would be working with. As the food/drink group, we started researching who the audience and competitors would be and collected samples of their publications to use as reference. After the initial research phase, we all provided a different interpretation of the data which is evidenced in our magazines.
All of the content in the magazine was generated by our group and the corresponding food/drink group in the other class. Everything from the articles, interviews, advertisements, photography, and artwork is original content generated by our group.
I started by creating a consistent color palette throughout. I chose to use green, orange, and brown colors because I felt that the natural and freshness of the color palette best represented Sacramento and the budding food culture that is on the rise. Other colors were used minimally only to tie the magazine with the other issues and strengthen the overall system. My magazine features color edited imagery to provide a stronger consistency with the color palette. The inspiration behind the artwork and layout is that I wanted to make the magazine resemble something similar to an internet blog combined with a recipe cookbook. This inspiration keeps it consistent with the topic of food while also targeting millennials as a target audience which was reflected in our research data. The magazine features a diverse set of content from interviews with local business owners to highlights of Sacramento’s most interesting eateries.
